The primary grant in relation to home insulation that is available with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) will be the Home Energy Saving (HES) scheme. The season once the house was constructed will most likely determine the kind of insulation required. When the house was built since 1920, the house will likely have cavity walls and more than likely, if the house was built after 1950. Solid walls are the other main construct of the house.
Cavity Walls may have two skins of brick, or one brick and something concrete block, having a gap in between, where air circulates and thus prevents water penetration. By insulting this gap may prevent air circulation, trapping the air and thereby stopping heat loss by approximately 65 per cent.
Insulating cavity walls, however, requires every exterior wall to be treated simultaneously. Therefore, it is best suited from a cost viewpoint for homes which can be heated throughout long periods. This kind of insulation will not be practical for any block of apartments, unless the whole building is being insulated simultaneously.
For cavity walls, there are two main home insulation methods what are the dry method and also the foam method.
The dry method utilises mineral-wool fibres or expanded polystyrene beads blown through holes drilled on the outer surface of the wall up until the cavity is filled and insulation is finished. This method also ensures the optimum use of materials used.
The foam method can be manufactured on location and pumped with the holes burrowed on the outside wall. The foam dries after a few days and solidifies, and it needs to be recognized for timber-framed homes.
Solid walls can be insulated in a different way, by either insulting the outside of the walls or line the interior top of the wall. Both of these methods can lead to the joinery, electrical and plumbing supplies being affected.
One other downside of this method is that it is very expensive and may modify the visage in the building involved. This can be caused since the cladding required on the exterior wall is an elaborate process, affecting pipes, windows wcuiuh doors. These features may need to be repositioned to support the insulation.
By lining the interior wall, skirting boards, picture rails, architraves, lights, sockets and radiators may be affected and will have to be repositioned as a result. Using a thermal board can be employed to insulate the interior wall also by fixing the boards to battens. This can be performed by attaching the thermal board direct for the walls using a board recommended adhesive, with an additional fixing of screws to hold the thermals boards in position.
